| Building Birch Mugs
Master's Touch uses every part of the birch the from the base to the branch tips to build their custom gift items. The extreme abundance of birch trees in Alaska provides ample resources to build birch mugs and other gifts. Even birch considered waste by the sawmills has use in the production of these wooden mugs. Building birch mugs is a labor intensive process requiring more than ten separate steps. From cutting the tree to applying the last coats of finish, each step has been refined for maximum efficiency. The production process has led to innovative new tool designs and two United States patents. The U.S. patents are for birch mugs with bark (pat.# 401,114 November 17, 1998) and without bark (pat.# 401,809 December 1, 1998). After cutting a birch tree to several pieces of mug height, the mugs are hollowed and dried. The mugs are then sanded inside and out in preparation for attaching handles and lids. Handles and lids are fitted individually for each birch mug. Some of these wooden mugs are then painted by local artist Martin Baumes or laser engraved to show an Alaskan theme. Finishing coats are then applied to each mug to preserve and protect for many long years of enjoyment. These unique wooden mugs are then ready to be shipped to you, our customer.
